Radford Chemical Scare A Mystery

19 People Hospitalized

At least 27 people were treated for exposure to some type of chemical at Radford High School Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

Officials shut down the school for the day.

Fire teams responded to the school at around 8 a.m. after students and staff began complaining of burning eyes and throats and rashes.

Firefighters Work on StudentsHazardous materials teams set up a decontamination station and scrubbed down at least eight students. A total of 19 others were sent to area hospitals.

Firefighters took air samples. Officials speculated that the chemical could be a pepper spray of some kind.

Teams gave the all clear sign at 11 a.m. Officials said that the odor had dissapated.

Education officials said that since the incident was centered in the cafeteria, all food will be thown out. Officials said that school will be in session Thursday.
