HONOLULU -- Maui County Council members on Friday unanimously passed a law prohibiting stores from giving out plastic shopping bags. The ban is a first for the state of Hawaii. The law will go into effect in January 2011 to give businesses the chance to use their back stock of bags.
Councilman Michael Molina introduced the bill."Cities and countries throughout the world are experiencing the destructive impacts plastic bags are having on their environment," Molina said in a written statement. The law will help the environment and save taxpayers money, lawmakers said.Right now, the county spends $200,000 a year for a contractor to pick up stray plastic bags blowing around the Maui landfill.
